Snot and Splash is a family adventure/comedy feature film directed by Teemu Nikki and produced by It's Alive Films. Laskos Virtuals Oy created a previsualization for one of the film's VFX-heavy scenes. The art department provided a SketchUp 3D model of the set, which was planned to be built in the studio. VFX supervisor was Tuomo Hintikka from VFX Helsinki.
The director was able to explore the blocking of the scene through previsualization. With 3D previz, the abstract movements from the script are translated into concrete movements in space. Previz helps identify practical issues earlier in the pre-production stage.
The full-scale set, combined with accurate focal lengths and the ARRI camera sensor size, allowed the team to explore the field of view from various angles. The pacing of the scene was tested through rough editing and sound design to ensure it flowed cohesively.
The previsualization provided an excellent visual communication tool for collaboration among the film crew, especially with the VFX department. It allowed the VFX team to see the desired effects clearly and make more accurate estimations. Previz also enabled different departments to identify potential challenges early on and collaborate on more creative solutions.
This previsualization was created using an early release of Unreal Engine 5, which introduced several new features, such as Lumen and Nanite, that greatly enhanced the process. However, the early version had its downsides, as it frequently crashed. Additionally, the use of AI-generated voices was still in its early stages at the time.
